Lark – Age 5
The first time I heard Kaela's voice, I was five years old and hiding in a closet full of bleach bottles.
I was hungry.
I was scared.
And someone was coming.
I didn't know where I was.
Only that it was wrong.
Too many footsteps. Too many strangers. Too much noise.
I curled into a ball, trying to be smaller. My knees ached. My chest hurt. I didn't cry—because someone had told me not to. I couldn't remember who. Just that it mattered.
And then...
She came.
Not in the room.
In my bones.
A voice — wild and sharp and furious.
Kaela.
"We're not supposed to be here."
I gasped so hard I choked on the bleach.
Who are you?
"You. I'm you. Your wolf. And we need to run."
I didn't understand. I didn't know what a wolf was. Not really. But I knew what it meant to feel... safe.
And she made me feel safe.
Until the door opened.
Until the man with too-white teeth reached in and said, "Found her."
And Kaela screamed.
Not with fear.
With rage.
"Fight."
But I couldn't. Not yet.
So I screamed too.
And they dragged me away.
That was the day they took my name.
My family.
My future.
But not my wolf.
Never my wolf.
And Kaela has never stopped whispering:
They're coming back.
And this time, we won't hide.
