"Did you hear about the arrival of Silver Crescent's Alpha?"

I paused, my gaze moving from the dirty dishes in front of me to the curious brown eyes of my only friend, Harper Atkins. Around us, the kitchen of the Alpha house bustled with the lowest-ranking pack members. It was extra loud today, which had started to annoy me.

I shook my head, leaning in as she opened her mouth to speak.

"I overheard Priscilla gush about it to Lucy when I was passing them by. Why else do you think everyone has been given a week's worth of tasks today?" she said, motioning towards the enormous pile of dishes we had.

I shrugged wordlessly, scrubbing at the next dish.

Harper was a petite redhead with a penchant for gossiping. She had gotten in trouble more times than I could count, but she still lived off it. She was the only person who didn't treat me like the most disgusting form of scum in the pack.

A fact that I was reminded of a couple of times every day.

"Do you think the Alpha's coming because of Henry Donovan?" she continued, her eyes bouncing around to check if someone was eavesdropping on our conversation.

I raised an eyebrow at the mention of the resident high-ranking scumbag. "Henry Donovan?"

"He was found dead by the pack border. Some are saying that a group of rogues attacked him or something," she whispered, a shiver passing down her body in fright.

I glanced around a little cautiously before looking at the jumpy girl in front of me. "I think he deserved it," I replied, keeping my voice low.

Harper swiped her finger on the foamy bubbles of the dishwashing soap and flicked it at me. "Sometimes I forget how emotionless you are."

I wiped my cheek with the sleeve of my flimsy shirt and bit my lip, chewing on it. As much as I would have loved to deny that statement, it was who I had become. An emotionless shell.

Did that mean I didn't feel anything at all? No. Did it mean that I bottled up all the feelings and pushed them into the darkest corner of my soul? Absolutely.

"But you're right. He had it coming. Just because that old creep was friends with some high-ranking wolves, he got away with too much." She paused, wringing her fingers together. "Do you think it was the Ghost Hunter?"

I stilled at her words. "You know that's just a myth, right?"

Harper didn't miss a beat. "Nope. I like to believe there is someone out there who can crush these scumbags like bugs."

Harper resumed setting the dried plates back in the rack while my mind whirled.

There was a reason why Silver Crescent's arrival was creating the loudest buzz in the pack today.

Even though a lot of packs had visited before, Silver Crescent didn't usually come unless it was absolutely necessary. They were the biggest pack in the Were kingdom and the strongest of all.

If they were coming, it meant this was serious business.

For the unmated girls, it meant an opportunity to either find mates or seduce mateless males. According to Harper, Silver Crescent had the "yummiest males" of all the packs, hence why all the females in the pack were dressing up to impress.

Cue gagging.

Silver Crescent's Alpha, Kayden, had the reputation of leading one of the best protected packs in the nation. Little was known about him, other than that he rarely had mercy on those who had ill intentions towards his pack, and he was strikingly handsome.
